Why Is My Furnace Running but Not Heating the House?

It can be frustrating when your furnace is running and the blower is moving air, yet your home is not getting warmer. Several issues can cause a furnace to run without adequately heating the home, including thermostat settings, restricted airflow, ignition problems, fuel supply issues, and ductwork leaks.

It is important to understand how heating systems work in order to identify the major source of the problem.

Thermostat Settings

Homeowners often overlook basic thermostat configurations. If the fan switch is in the “ON” position, the blower motor runs continuously. Air keeps moving through the vents even when the furnace burner turns off between cycles.

Switching the thermostat fan setting to “AUTO” solves this issue. In “AUTO” mode, the system blows air only when the burners actively produce heat. Also, set the temperature five degrees above the current room reading to trigger a new heating cycle.

Dirty Air Filters

Air filters catch dust and airborne debris from circulating air. A severely clogged filter can restrict airflow across the heat exchanger. This can cause the furnace to overheat and activate its high-limit safety switch, which shuts off the burners while the blower may continue running.

However, the blower fan will keep operating until the system cools down. By changing the clogged filter, the system can function normally again.

Flame Sensor Contamination

A dirty flame sensor is one of the common reasons for cold air blowing out of the furnace. A flame sensor is a small metal component that detects whether the burner flame has been established. Over time, the sensor can become coated with soot or oxidation, which may interfere with its ability to detect the flame. If the sensor fails to detect the flame, the furnace control system typically shuts off the gas supply as a safety measure.

Cleaning a soot-covered sensor establishes proper communication with the control board, though scheduling a professional furnace repair prevents recurring shutdowns.

Ignition Failure

Modern furnaces depend on electric ignition systems, whereas traditional ones make use of a standing pilot flame. Repairing or replacing the ignition parts requires a professional furnace repair service. When the pilot flame goes out, the gas burners will not ignite. The electronic igniter can also wear out.

In both cases, there will be an indication of lack of flame where the fuel supply is automatically shut down, but the fan still runs.

Closed Gas Supply

A furnace needs a steady stream of fuel to produce heat. If someone accidentally bumps the gas valve near the unit, gas stops reaching the burner assembly.

Check the shut-off valve on the gas line leading into the furnace. The handle must run parallel to the gas pipe. If the handle sits perpendicular, the valve remains closed. Turn the handle back into line with the pipe to supply gas to the burners.

Leaky Ductwork

Warm air travels through ductwork to reach every room in the house. Loose joints in these ducts allow warm air to escape into unheated spaces like attics or crawlspaces.

Unconditioned air enters through the leaks and blends with warm air. By the time the air enters at the vents in the living area, it will be lukewarm or cold. Sealing the seams of the duct will increase the flow of warm air.
